Chesterfield County Public Schools, A school official Chesterfield County faces charges of driving under the influence of alcohol and failure to stop after an incident Saturday night left five damaged vehicles.

Van De Mortel was convicted in Henrico County for driving while intoxicated, first offense, in September 2005. He was sentenced to six months in jail with all but five days suspended, fined court costs of $ 300, $ 196, and a one-year suspension of his driver’s license

Van De Mortel, the dean of students at Matoaca High School, was arrested shortly after at his home near Monument Avenue, police said.

The Chesterfield County Public Schools system, said he was looking into the arrest and declined to comment further, citing a confidentiality policy in personnel matters. A spokesman confirmed that Van De Mortel works Matoaca High School and taught social studies at James River High School in the northwest corner of the county. He worked for the system for 10 years.

Richmond police said Paul Van De Mortel, 44, was arrested after witnesses reported seeing a vehicle sideswipe five cars parked in the block of West 2800, Grace Street near the Fan District of the city.
